WRITTEN PATTERN
First we are going to start by making the main body of the hat so you will want to grab your orange yarn and hook (if you are newer to crochet I would suggest using stitch markers in your 1st and last stitch of every row to ensure your stitch count remains the same for every row)
Foundation Chain
Newborn – Ch28
3-6 Months – Ch32
6-12 Months – Ch 36
Toddler – ch38
- Row 1 – Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook place 1 HTC in every ch across – ch1 and turn –
27sts,
31sts
35sts
38sts
- Row 2 – place 1 blohtc in the 1st st and every st across, ch1 and turn
27sts
31sts
35sts
38sts
repeat row 2 as follows
Newborn – repeat 34 times [total row count 36 rows]
3-6 Months repeat row 2 38 times [total row count 40 rows]
6-12 Months – repeat row 2 44 times [total row count 46 rows]
Toddler – repeat row 2 50 times [total row count 52 rows]
once you have completed the number of rows necessary for the size of hat that you are making slip stitch the hat together you should have the same number of slip stitches as stitches per row (please see video tutorial if you need support in completing this step)
Once slip stitched together cut yourself a long loose end and thread on your darning needle, weave the loose end in and out all around the top of the hat once you have weaved in and out all the way around gently pull on the loose end to draw the top of the hat together, leaving a hole in the top of the hat approximately an inch in diameter (don’t forget to check the video out for support in this step if needed).
Now that you have completed the main part of your hat you will want to grab your green yarn and we will next make the top of the hat and pumpkin stalk 🙂
TOP OF HAT/PUMPKIN STALK
We are going to make the top of the hat and pumpkin stalk by working in the round you will find working in the round much easier if you mark the 1st stitch of every round with a stitch marker 🙂 The pattern for this part of the hat is the same for every size
- to begin make a magic ring (See video tutorial for support on this step if necessary)
- Round 1 – place 8dc into the magic ring, and close ring [8sts]
- Round 2 – 8 – place 1dc into every st (remember we are working in a spiral) [8sts]
- Round 9 – 1dc inc into every st [16sts]
- Round 10 – *dc, dc inc* Repeat 7 times [24sts]
- Round 11 – *dc, dc, dc inc* Repeat 7 times [32sts] sl st to the 1st st to join ch1 and fasten off leaving a long enough loose end to sew the top onto the hat.
- place the top of the hat central to the top of the body of the hat and sew it together (I use a mattress stitch for this please see video tutorial for support)
SOoooooooooooo your hat should be taking shape now and I hope you are pleased with the result so far next we are going to make the curly vines, you will need to grab your green yarn again for this part
CURLY VINES
to make the curly vines first you will need to make a slip know and ch 40, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook place a dc inc in every ch along once you have placed your last dc inc you will want to ch 30 to make the 2nd vine and again starting in the 2nd ch from the hook place a dc inc in every ch along slip st to join ch 1 and fasten off :)))))))) YES THEY ARE THAT EASY :)))))))) Lets move on to the final decoration for the hat………
LEAF
you will want to grab your green yarn again make a slip know and foundation ch of 12
- Row 1 – dc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next 9 chs, 3dc into the last ch and then working back down along the opposite side of the chs place 1dc in the next 8 chs, ch1 and turn
- Row 2 – 1blodc in the 1st 9sts, 3blodc into the next st, 1blodc into the next 9 sts, ch 1 and turn
- Row 3 – 1 blodc in the 1st 10sts, 3 blodc into the next st, 1blodc into the next 8 sts, ch1 and turn
- Row 4 – Repeat Row 2
- Row 5 – Repeat Row 3
- Row 6 – 1blodc into the 1st 9sts, into the 11th st work 1dc then ch 4 and starting in 2nd ch from hook place 1dc in eac of the remaining 3 chs dc back into the 11th stitch (This makes the stem og the leaf and makes joining the leaf to the hat easier) next blodc into the next 9sts, ch 1 and fasten off 🙂
next all that is left to do is weave in your loose ends and attach your curly vines and leaf to the hat, please do not forget that there is the video tutorial to support you in completing all of these step 🙂
