
I hope that you all enjoy this weeks free pattern for my Smitten Mittens they have a lovely ribbed cuff and the half herringbong treble crochet (UK Terminology) makes a beautifully textured and dense mitten that is sure to keep your hand lovely and warm. This is a fun little project either to make for yourself or as a last minute gift for somebody this Christmas……. they are sure to put a smile on anybody’s face
MATERIALS
- Two colours of Aran Yarn colour A (I chose Woolcraft Aran in Dusty Rose) you will need approx 80g of and Colour B (I chose Woolcraft Aran in White) you will need approx 30g of
- 5mm Crochet Hook
- 4mm Crochet Hook
- Stitchmarkers (If you feel more confident using them to mark your 1st and last stitch of the the row/round)
- Scissors
- Darning needle
ABBREVIATIONS
- WS – Wrong Side
- FLO – Front Loop Only
- BLO – Back Loop Only
- SL ST – Slip Stitch
- CH – Chain
- dc – UK Double Crochet (US Single Crochet)
- HHTC – UK Herringbone Half Treble Crochet (US Half Double Crochet)
NOTES
- I use UK terminology in my patterns to see the US equivalent please see above in the abbreviations list
- For herringbone half treble crochet stitch make sure that your tension isn’t too tight or it can be difficult to crochet.
- The turning chain ch 1 does NOT count as a stitch throughout this pattern
Special Stitches
- Half Herringbone Treble Crochet (without Colour Change) this worked up by yarning over, inserting the hook through the designated stitch, yarning over and pulling the hook back through the stitch (three loops on hook) next you will drop the middle loop off the hook leaving two loops on hook then yarn over and pull through the last two loops to complete the stitch.
- Half Herringbone Treble Crochet (with colour change)this worked up by yarning over, inserting the hook through the designated stitch in your first colour , yarning over and pulling the hook back through the stitch (three loops on hook) next you will drop the middle loop off the hook leaving two loops on hook then drop your 1st colour pick up your 2nd colour yarn over and pull through the last two loops to complete the stitch.
Ribbed Cuff
- ch13
- Row 1 – sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and in every st across, ch1 and turn [12sts]
- Row 2 – blo sl st in every st across, ch1 and turn [12sts]
- Row 3 – 56 Repeat Row 2
- fold the cuff in half (ws touching in the middle)and sl st the cuff together going through flo on the side closest to you and both loops of the side furthest away from you [12sts]
Hand
Using 5mm hook
- Row 1 – In Colour A 1dc in every valley row all across starting in the first one after the ch1 , sl st to join and ch1 (do not turn)[28sts]
- Row 2 – 1hhtc with colour change into the first st in colour A, hhtc with colour change into 2nd st in colour B and alternate hhtc with colour changes in colours A and B in every st around. your last st should be in colour B. You will not change colour on the last st as your first st of the next row will be in the same colour that you finished your last row in here and throughout this pattern, sl st to join and ch1 [28sts] (please see video tutorial for how I make my colour changes)
- Row 3 – 1hhtc with colour change into the 1st st in colour B, 1hhtc with colour change into the 2nd st in colour A, alternate hhtc with colour changes in colours B and A in every st around.your last st should be in colour A you will not change colour on the last st as your first st of the next row will be in the same colour that you finished your last row in here and throughout this pattern, sl st to join and ch 1 [28 sts]
- Row 4 – Repeat Row 2
- Row 5 – Repeat Row 3
- Row 6 – Repeat Row 2
- Row 7 – Repeat Row 3
- Row 8 – Repeat Row 2
- Row 9 – Right hand – 1hhtc with colour change into the 1st st in colour B, 1hhtc with colour change into the 2nd st in colour A, alternate hhtc with colour changes in colours B and A in the next 16 sts(on the last st pull through and finish the st with both colour A and B), using both strands of yarn ch 6 , sk 6 sts, 1hhtc with colour changes until your last st in last 4 sts in alternate colours left hand – 1hhtc into the 1st st in colour B, 1hhtc into the 2nd st in colour A, alternate hhtc in colours B and A in the next 2 sts (on the last st pull through and finish the st with both colour A and B) using both strands of yarn ch 6, sk 6 sts, 1hhtc with colour changes until your last st the remaining 18 sts in alternate colours
Using 4mm hook
- Row 10 – Repeat Row 2
- Row 11 – Repeat Row 3
- Row 12 – Repeat Row 2
- Row 13 – Repeat Row 3
- Row 14 – Repeat Row 2
- Row 15 – Repeat Row 3
- Row 16 – Repeat Row 2
- Row 17 – Repeat Row 3
- Row 18 – Repeat Row 2
- Row 19 – Repeat Row 3
- Row 20 – Repeat Row 2 ( Change to colour A on your last pull through of the blast st of this round, the remainder of the mitten will be worked up using colour A)
- Row 21 – In Colour A place 1dc in every st around, sl st to join and ch 1 [28sts]
- Row 22 – 1 dc in the 1st 5 sts, 1dc decrease, *1 dc in the next 5 sts, 1 dc decrease* Repeat twice, sl st to join and ch 1 [24sts]
- Row 23 – 1 dc in the 1st 4 sts, 1dc decrease, *1 dc in the next 4 sts, 1 dc decrease* Repeat twice, sl st to join and ch 1 [20sts]
- Row 24 – 1 dc in the 1st 3 sts, 1dc decrease, *1 dc in the next 3 sts, 1 dc decrease* Repeat twice, sl st to join and ch 1 [16sts]
- Row 24 – 1 dc in the 1st 2 sts, 1dc decrease, *1 dc in the next 2 sts, 1 dc decrease* Repeat twice, sl st to join and ch 1 [12sts] fasten off
- take your darning needle and turn your mitten inside out, close the top of your mitten and weave in any loose ends
Thumb Using 5mm Hook
- Round 1 -Attch colour A and place 1 dc in every st around, sl st to join and ch 1 [12 sts]
- Round 2 – 1dc in every st around, sl st to join and ch1 [12 sts]
- Round 3 – 9
- Round 10 – 1 dc into 1st st, 1 dc decrease into next st *1 dc, 1dc decrease* repeat twice sl si to join ch 1 and fasten off turn mitten inside out and close the top of the thumb
Now all that is left to do is weave in your loose ends, enjoy your new mittens or decide who the lucky person will be if you have made them for gift
